09/2014 Exploring the Now, Hygienemuseum, Dresden, Germany

Over 15000 visitors

"One of our best visited exhibitions."  (Prof. Klaus Vogel, director of Deutsches Hygiene-Museum)

The experience of time is subjective. A short moment can be perceived as long and rich in content, or days can go by without trace. Through a systematical combination of concepts from arts and cognitive science we investigated possibilities to change the perceived quality and duration of the present moment. In three interactive installations the visitors got the opportunity to play with time and space to modify the subjectively perceived „now“.

At each installation several visitors could make a new mapping between physical actions and sensual experiences. In this manner it becomes possible to intuitively experiment with the personal Experience of presence.

Kaleidoscope of Time

During the exhibition, an experiment was conducted at the Kaleidoscope of Time and data was acquired with 70 individuals, demonstrating significant effects of the installation on time perception and intoxication: Fritz TH, Steixner A, Boettger J and Villringer A (2015) Losing track of time through delayed body representations. Front. Psychol. 6:405.
